A NEW city nightclub branding itself as a "student and alternative" venue plans to bring revellers from Exeter and Truro into Plymouth on double-decker buses.
The former Thirst – later Play Plymouth – club in Vauxhall Street is under the new ownership of Sean Mapp, has been completely refurbished and will open this Saturday, September 19, as Play Plymouth Barbican.
Key features will include drinks offers, as the club is a free house.
General manager Robbie Collier said Play Plymouth Barbican will have a capacity of 600 people and will be open until 4.30am on Friday and Saturdays and 3am the rest of the week.
He said: "We will have two dance floors, one for party music and oldies and one for the latest chart and house music.
"We will also have a chill-out VIP room with chandeliers, mirrors and signed Lenkiewicz prints.
"We will have entertainment on a regular basis and the club will have quite a gay edge."
Mr Collier, who has run several successful city clubs in the past, added that Play Plymouth Barbican will have its own internal sheltered smoking area and will use the same top security company as two other local night-spots.
He said that the bus service could be extended to Torbay if it proves popular.
The Barbican/Bretonside area is fast becoming a popular night-life zone, with clubs such as Annabel's and venues such as OMG and The Dairy as well as the Boston Tea Party coffee house.
The planned redevelopment of Bretonside Bus Station could also help attract students away from their traditional haunts on North Hill and Mutley Plain.
