Plymouth people have been reliving fond memories of the time they spent with much-loved actor Alan Rickman, following his death from cancer aged just 69. The Harry Potter and Die Had star filmed in the city in 1994 when Saltram House became a set for the movie Sense and Sensibility. And a number of Plymouth people met the star through the years either in the city or on his acting assignments elsewhere. Rickman's family confirmed the news of the British actor's death today, which sparked a huge wave of tributes from fans across the world. Having starred in Die Hard and Harry Potter movies amongst others, Rickman had paid a few visits to Plymouth during his acting career. His first appearance in the city came in 1994, where Saltram House was featured in Sense and Sensibility, forming the scene where Mrs Dashwood and her daughters leave 'Norland'. He played the role of Colonel Brandon, and the film was later dubbed one of the most successful movies to have been filmed in the Westcountry. "I was thrown in at the deep end and I loved every minute of it." recalls Roy Chandler, then steward at Saltram. "The only downside was a distinct lack of sleep. Filming days were long!" Plymouth brothers Robin and Matt Bowler along with their friend Jason Mulligan also brushed shoulders with the star during the filming of the 2001 film Blow Dry. The pair, who had been competing in the British Hairdressing Championships, were asked to star in the film alongside famous names including Heidi Klum, Josh Hartnett and Rickman in Shoreditch Town Hall to shoot some of the scenes. Robin, 22 at the time said: "The two days we spent filming in London were great. "We managed to get a picture with Alan during our time of filming; we collared him at the end of one of the days; he was happy to pose with us." Matt, who had scooped the winning award for the Men's Hair Championship in 1998 spoke of how Alan was interested in his recent win. "The extras used to hang out in what was called the green room- Alan didn't stay in there, he had a Winnebago. "But one day, he stuck his head around the door and showed an interest in the work I had been doing to get to the championships. "I think I cracked a silly joke about how I thought his scar on his face had healed up quickly, as he had just been filming for Robin Hood before Blow Dry. "He was a nice guy, it was great to meet him." The brothers now co-own their families business, Bowlers hair and beauty salon in St Judes and have held the memory of the event closely, keeping a box of past memorabilia from their days filming. Friend of the brothers, Jason Mulligan who is now manager of Big Pine & Oak Furniture Shop on Exeter Street went along to feature as one of the hair models to be worked on during filming. "We all met Alan whilst shooting, we got chatting during our time there. "He was an incredibly nice chap. "He took the time to speak to us although we were only together for a small amount of time. "He was very welcoming." A family statement revealed that the actor had died from cancer, and was surrounded by family and friends.
