Craig David at south Devon school for secret gig ahead of One Big Weekend

Chart-topping star Craig David was in south Devon for a secret gig this morning before sitting down with school students for a question and answer session.

The Brit chart topper was visiting a local school as part of the Radio1 Academy programme - ahead of One Big Weekend in Exeter.

The event at Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot was part of a month of free outreach activities across Teignbridge and Exeter in the run up to BBC Radio's Big Weekend at Powderham Castle next month.

The R1 Academy aims to inspire local 16-19 year-olds to take the next step in creative careers.

Now in its fifth year, Radio 1's Academy includes a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity in the area, which began in Teignbridge this week and culminates in Exeter in May with a week of radio shows, gigs, practical workshops and Q&As.

More details about the Exeter events from 17th-21st May, taking place at Exeter Phoenix will be announced soon.

Craig who is back in the charts after almost a decade in the wilderness will return to Devon performing at the R1 Big Weekend, which takes place from May 28-29.

He'll join the likes of Ellie Goulding, Coldplay, Mumford and Sons, Nick Jonas, Meghan Trainor and Iggy Azalea on the line up, which will see 50,000 music fans descend on the venue over the two days.

Singer-songwriter Craig rose to fame in 1999 featuring on the single "Re-Rewind" by Artful Dodger.

His debut album, Born to Do It, was released in 2000, after which he has released a further five studio albums and worked with a variety of artists such as Tinchy Stryder, Kano, Jay Sean, Rita Ora and Sting.

The successful star, who hails from Southampton, has sold more than 13 million records worldwide as a solo artist.

His big hits over the years include Fill Me In, 7 Days, Walking Away and Rise and Fall.
