Sir Elton John, one of the most decorated and bestselling British artists of all time, will perform at Westpoint Exeter in 2016.

Elton will bring his world-renowned live band for the show which will take place in a specially-created stadium for the evening next spring.

He has only performed in Exeter twice before, once in 1973 and once in 2003 solo. So it is over 40 years since Elton and his band have performed in Exeter.

Having given over 4,000 performances in a career spanning more than fifty years, Elton said: "The simple truth is I want to spend more time with my family, and I am only too aware of just how precious the time ahead is.

"My sons are growing up so quickly; their early years are just flying by and I want to be there with them. So these concerts will give me the chance to thank the British audiences who have been so faithful to me over these many decades.

"We cannot get to everyone but I am going to try to get back to people who love music but get so few concerts – so that makes Exeter important to me".

Westpoint Chief Executive Richard Maunder said: "We are delighted to be welcoming Sir Elton John. It will be the first outdoor concert since planning permission was granted in 2012 for three outdoor concerts per year, and I am sure it will be well supported by all those who love the music that the 'Rocket Man' has belted out during his amazing 40-year career. It promises to be a night to remember".

An unmistakable name in the history of popular music, Elton John has done it all – and then some. From being awarded multiple Grammys and BRITs, and even an Oscar and a Tony Award, Elton has proven his universal acclaim. In addition to selling more than 250 million records worldwide, through his partnership with lyricist Tim Rice, Elton wrote the music for the feature film and Broadway stage production of 'The Lion King".

Having performed at several of the world's most recognisable venues – including a pair of residencies at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Elton John continues to be one of this country's biggest pop-culture exports, and as such, welcoming him to Westpoint Exeter will be a rare opportunity.

Elton John hits Exeter Westpoint on June 19, 2016. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday, October 23, 2015, via https://www.plymouthpavilions.com/eltonjohn/Online/
