Morrissey has announced his gig at Plymouth Pavilions this week will be one of the last times fans will get to see him live and said he will quit touring after the next two shows.
The star has been dropped by his record label and says without the prospect of newly released material there is no point in live shows.
Fans complained of a lack of atmosphere at the Plymouth gig which they put down to the show not selling out - while the star himself was reported to be on top form.
In a statement to fans Morrissey said: "There is absolutely no way that we can generate any interest from record labels in the United Kingdom, therefore the imminent two nights at Hammersmith are likely to be our final ever UK shows.
"We are obsessively grateful for all interest and loyalty from our audience ... throughout 28 years ... but without new releases, there is no point in any additional touring.
"Thank you for so many absolutely incredible times. The pleasure and privilege is mine ..."
